Global Learning Adventures

“Life is a journey, not a destination”.

                               Ralph Waldo Emerson

The name of this website, Global Learning Adventures, is neither a company nor an organization but reflects the integration of concepts related to these three words.

We live in a time when we are connected to other parts of the world more closely than any other time in history.  This gives us the wonderful opportunity to experience and understand the language, cultural, economic and political similarities and differences amongst people and countries from across the globe.  We have the opportunity to not only enrich our own lives but also to enrich those with whom we come into contact.

Learning has been defined as, “the lifelong process of transforming information and experience into knowledge, skills, behaviours and attitudes”.  We sometimes place a higher value on formal education and tend to underplay the value of the informal life experiences that have shaped our physical, cognitive, social, emotional and spiritual development.  I believe that learning occurs in ‘all that we do at all times’ and not just at ‘institutions of learning' such as schools and universities.  By integrating formal and informal learning and seeking out new learning opportunities we continue to grow throughout all stages of our lives.

Adventure is typically some form of activity that involves a degree of risk that often occurs outside the realm of our everyday lives. It adds ’newness and excitement'' to our lives.  My personal choice of adventure often involves outdoor activities like hiking, biking and kayaking as well as trailer camping and overseas travel.  My travel and work at the British Columbia Canadian International School in Cairo, Egypt for an extended period of  time is certainly a new and exciting adventure for me!

The posts on this website reflect my journey as a global citizen, lifelong learner, educator and adventurer.  They blend visual and written descriptions of both the personal and professional aspects of my life.   It is my hope that viewers of the website  will be inspired to create their own adventures ...  whatever that might be ...

As my family, friends  and colleagues have often  heard me say, “it’s all part of the adventure”...
